Darren Christopher Loughran is an Irish classical guitarist, lutenist, and musicologist based in Dublin. His work spans performance, research, and education, reflecting a long-standing commitment to the classical guitar and its evolving repertoire.
Darren began his musical life at an early age, growing up in a musical household where traditional Irish music was a constant presence. His father was a concertina player, and early experiences performing in school bands and competitions introduced him to the discipline and joy of ensemble music-making. It was during his teenage years that he discovered the classical guitar and became captivated by its expressive possibilities.
After his initial guitar studies with teacher Tony Lee, he studied classical guitar at the Dublin Conservatory of Music under the guidance of Alan Grundy and continued his development through study with internationally renowned guitarist Denis Azabagic. Darren subsequently completed a Master’s degree in Performance and Musicology at Maynooth University, where his research focused on historical musicology and the development of twentieth-century classical guitar repertoire.
As a performer, Darren’s work centres primarily on solo classical guitar recital, with appearances in Ireland and internationally. His programmes often combine established repertoire with works by contemporary composers, and he has collaborated with composers on the revision and performance of new music for the instrument. Alongside his solo work, he has also taken part in a variety of collaborative projects, performances, and cultural events across Europe.
Darren’s musical interests extend into research and archival work. He has contributed transcription and editorial work for the Irish Traditional Music Archive, bringing elements of Irish traditional music into dialogue with classical guitar practice.
In parallel with his performing career, Darren has built an extensive teaching practice and has worked with students across all levels of musical development. His approach to teaching emphasises strong technical foundations, musical curiosity, and an appreciation for the historical and cultural contexts that shape repertoire. Through both performance and education, he remains dedicated to exploring and expanding the expressive possibilities of the classical guitar.
